Joseph M. Scott, M.D., died on November 29, 2016 at his apartment at Kirby Pines Community. Born May 9, 1925 at Portsmouth, Virginia, he was the oldest son of Joseph W. & Irma Smith Scott. He was a 1943 graduate of Central High School. A veteran of WWII. He was awarded the Expert Infantry Badge, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star Medal. Joseph M. Scott, M.D., died on November 29, 2016 at his apartment at Kirby Pines Community. Born May 9, 1925 at Portsmouth, Virginia, he was the oldest son of Joseph W. & Irma Smith Scott. He was a 1943 graduate of Central High School. A veteran of WWII. He was awarded the Expert Infantry Badge, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star Medal. Dr. Scott was a 1950 gradate of Georgia Tech and was elected to Tau Beta Pi and was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. Mr. Scott was a 1954 graduate of the U.T. College of Medicine. After an internship at the John Gaston Hospital (The Med) he did general practice at Dallas, GA for three years. He completed a residency in ophthalmology at the Memphis Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital and at the John Gaston Hospital. Dr. Scott retired in 2005 at the age of eighty after practicing medicine and ophthalmology for over fifty years. He was a diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Life Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He was the first secretary of the Memphis Society of Ophthalmology and later a president of that organization. Dr. Scott was also a longtime member of Second Presbyterian Church. Dr. Scott was preceded in death by his daughter, Judy Carol Scott and by his wife of over 56 years Macy Yarbrough Scott. He is survived by his wife Dora Deane (DeDe) Scott, and brothers Dr. Edwin C. (Mary Blanche) Scott of Memphis and Dr. Gene W. (Beverly) Scott of Williamsburg, Kentucky. He also leaves four sons: Michael J. Scott of Dallas, GA, Alan B. Scott of Memphis, David A. (Lori) Scott of Cuero, TX, and John B. (Debbie) Scott of Mobile, Alabama; stepson Michael (Terry) McGee and stepdaughters Jo Lynn (Ricky) Jackson, Stephanie Ann (Billy) McVay and Linda McGee; sixteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Family and friends will gather from five o'clock until eight o'clock in the evening on Friday, December 2nd and funeral services will begin at ten o'clock in the morning on Saturday, December 3rd all at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38119. The family suggests any memorials in Dr. Scott's name be sent to the Kirby Pines Foundation, Second Presbyterian Church, the Church Health Center, or Colonial Park United Methodist Church.
